Top Tips from an Essex Engagement & Wedding Photographer

Congratulations – you’re engaged! 🎉 If you’re here, you're probably looking for relaxed, natural engagement photos to celebrate this exciting time in your life — and maybe you’re also scouting for a wedding photographer in the Essex and surrounding areas?

I’m Zoe Cousins, a wedding and engagement photographer based in Essex, and I absolutely love helping couples feel at ease in front of the camera. Your engagement shoot should feel like a fun, romantic adventure — not a formal photoshoot.

Not sure about an engagement shoot? No problem! Below are a few bits of advice I have for all couples that come to me for an engagement shoot that should also give you more of an idea of what to expect.

Why Book an Engagement Shoot?

Engagement sessions are the perfect way to:

  • Capture your story before the wedding

  • Get comfortable in front of the camera (especially if you're nervous!)

  • Use photos for save-the-dates, wedding websites, or announcements

  • Build a connection with your photographer before the big day

Bonus: If you book both your engagement and wedding photography with me, it helps us build that rapport early so your wedding day feels relaxed and easy.

What to Wear for Your Engagement Shoot

One of the most common questions I get is: "What should we wear?" Here's the lowdown:

Do:

  • Wear clothes you feel confident and comfortable in.

  • Coordinate without matching – aim for complementary colours and similar styles (e.g. both casual, or both dressy).

  • Bring up to two outfit options if you'd like to mix it up – we can switch halfway through!

  • Choose block colours or subtle patterns that let your connection shine.

Try to Avoid:

  • Loud prints that may distract from the moment.

  • Mismatched levels of formality (e.g. one super casual, one super formal).

  • New outfits you haven’t worn before — comfort is key!

Top tip: If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help lend more advice beforehand

Choosing the Perfect Location

The setting should reflect you as a couple — whether that’s a walk in the woods, a stroll through your favourite town, or a windswept moment in the hills.

I’ll suggest some engagement shoot locations in your local area that match your vibe. Think woodlands, open fields, quirky town centres or even a place that’s meaningful to you both.

Don’t forget: Bring layers if the weather looks chilly and wear practical shoes for walking or changing locations.

Extra Tips to Nail Your Engagement Shoot

  • Be yourselves – laugh, hug, kiss, play around… this is your moment.

  • Plan something fun after – make it a date day! Go for lunch or a drink to celebrate.

  • Bring props or pets – a dog, a picnic, or even your favourite books can add personality.

  • Trust me – I’ll guide you through it, so you won’t feel awkward or staged.
